Elektre
By infusing their sound with trap and reggaeton textures, the Elektre project pays tribute to the urban roots of rebetiko. Born in the impoverished districts of Athens around 1920, rebetiko was the music of Greek exiles from Anatolia who sang of a bohemian life as outcasts, marked by intoxication and underground culture. By updating it with today’s urban codes, the trio makes this music accessible to a much broader audience.
Together, they offer a seamless and unique blend of African club music, electronica, bass music, and rap.
Through an innovative and captivating fusion that balances heavy electronic production with raw acoustic moments, the trio restores the festive and popular essence of rebetiko. As the bouzouki and percussion mirror the call and response of the vocals, they draw the listener into a poetic and sonic whirlwind traveling from the Aegean to the Balkans and across the Mediterranean. This is a vibrant, contemporary tribute to a folklore reborn, vividly alive and firmly rooted in the digital age of the 21st century.
